As a complement to the meeting between professionals of the VIGO FILM OFFICE Roundtable: Northern Brotherhoods, we will hold a special screening, for which each of the invited festivals has selected a significant short film from their territory.

A session where the GFFF audience, as well as the invited festivals, will have a good overview of the genre cinema being made in recent years in the north of the peninsula.

Terror Molins – Horror Film Festival of Molins de Rei (Catalunya)

The Horror Festival of Molins de Rei (Terrormolins) has its origins in 1973 with the first edition of the legendary 12 Hours of Horror Cinema marathon, which currently is the event that closes the festival. It has become a reference for both the audience and the genre film industry. More than 10,000 spectators, nearly 80 screenings over 10 days, and more than 80 accredited media representatives are among the key figures that define it.

Selection Rationale

The short films Barbie Hell and Baile con la muerte are two of the works that were programmed together with eight other short films of Catalan production, direction, or language in the Ç-Trencada Section of the Festival in 2024.

Both are just a small sample of the great diversity of perspectives that turn horror into a means of creative expression rather than an end in itself.

Both works overflow with imagination, both in the techniques used and in their respective plots. In the first, killer dolls reflect the harshness of the real world; in the second, the protagonist’s extreme attitude towards life takes her to the brink of death.

Semana de Cine Fantástico y de Terror de San Sebastián (Euskadi)

For 35 years now, one of the genre festivals with the most personality in Europe. It offers a not very extensive, but intense panorama of the best horror and fantasy of each year, before a participatory and knowledgeable audience.

The Teatro Principal is the temple of this great community of horror lovers. Carefully crafted exhibitions, publications and all kinds of parallel activities complete this celebration every late October early November.

International Festival of Fantastic and Horror Cinema of Navarra

The International Festival of Fantastic and Horror Cinema of Navarra was born in Pamplona in 2012 to bring to the public works of the genre that rarely reach theaters and, at the same time, giving visibility to new talents and Navarrese filmmakers. Throughout its editions, it has offered both international short films and recognized feature films, accompanied by parallel activities such as director presentations, musical performances and the presence of their famous costumed monsters. The festival is also distinguished by the active role of the audience, which votes for their favorite works, and by the participation of professional juries with relevant figures from the genre.

Selection Rationale

We proposed the short film Mano dura, directed by Audience Award winners Esther Velasco and Gabriel García, produced by CVLTO production company with the collaboration of the festival. The work features the participation of three of Navarra’s main performers: Aroa Alonso, José María Asín and Javier Baigorri. Although it was also conceived as a promotional piece for the festival and, therefore, is brief, we believe it offers a broad and representative look at the essence of the event.

FangoFest – International Festival of Fantastic Terror and Gore Cinema (Catalunya)

Fangofest Amposta began its journey in 2009, and since its beginnings, it has been directed by Jacint Espuny, who continues to serve as Director.

The initial idea was to bring rogue, trash and gore cinema to the lands of southern Catalunya.

A modest beginning with two days of screenings, which, little by little, grew to reach, currently, five days.

The genres that can be found include animation, fantastic horror, gore, trash and amateur cinema.

The festival’s highest award is the “Pont do inferno” (Bridge of Hell), which is given to the guest of honor of each edition in recognition of their career.

Along with the screenings of the projects competing in the festival, exhibitions, book presentations, concerts and other activities always linked to cinema are also held.

Lóstrego – Festival de Cinema Fantástico (Galicia)

“Lóstrego” is not just a festival, it is a meeting point for enthusiasts, professionals and people curious about fantastic cinema. An inclusive and vibrant space, where all attendees can enjoy a carefully selected program and participate in the various activities and events that they prepare with great care and dedication.

Selection Rationale

This short film, made by UDC students, represents us particularly, as they are young people starting in this field, and we feel strongly identified with the birth of this festival; moreover, the genre is one that best defines us.

Curtas – Festival do Imaxinario de Vilagarcía de Arousa (Galicia)

Founded in 1973, it is Galicia’s oldest festival, and the largest event dedicated to fantastic and horror cinema in the community. Internationally recognized as one of the 90 best genre festivals on Earth by Dread Central magazine, the world’s leading medium in the horror genre, Curtas Festival do Imaxinario stands out for its ability to generate unforgettable experiences with screenings of feature films and short films, exhibitions, presentations and parallel activities that make it an essential event for genre lovers.

Selection Rationale

Sombra do Mar, by Sergio Pereda, combines Galician tradition with the cosmic horrors created by H.P. Lovecraft in a stylistic exercise that perfectly reflects the spirit of Curtas Festival do Imaxinario, and which earned him the award for best direction in the Made in Galicia section at the 49th edition of the festival.

GFFF – Galician Freaky Film Festival

When, in 2017, the Galician Freaky Film Festival (GFFF) launched its “#0 Edition”, few could have imagined that they were witnessing the birth of one of the most electrifying events on the Galician cinematographic scene. Years later, the GFFF not only survived but also grew to become a colossal seven-headed monster that devours attendance and exhibition records with each new edition.

The festival, which is held annually between September and October in Vigo, transformed the fantastic, horror, and sci-fi film scene in Galicia. Its programming, as varied as it is ambitious, spans from the most recent independent productions to cult classics, offering a visual feast for the most demanding palates of the genre.

Selection Rationale

Representing the GFFF, the programming team chose the short film Menú del Día. A short film that perfectly embodies the spirit of the festival and whose birth and motivation stem from the same love and passion that emanates from any of the GFFF’s most iconic sessions.

A piece that, despite not telling anything new, represents a breath of fresh air for the horror and B-movie cinema being made in Galicia, leaning towards those rare birds that are films that mix comedy and horror.
