5.12.2025 | The Méliès International Festivals Federation (MIFF) proudly welcomes a new member to its global network: the Galician Freaky Film Festival (GFFF). By joining MIFF as a Competitive Member, the festival takes a significant step forward, strengthening the visibility and growth of Galician and Spanish genre cinema across Europe.

With this addition, Galicia reinforces its position on the international fantastic-film stage, standing alongside leading cultural regions that champion and celebrate genre filmmaking. Membership in MIFF also grants the GFFF eligibility to award the prestigious Méliès d’Argent for Best European Short Film starting in 2026, an international quality seal that places Galicia at the heart of European genre film distribution.

Galician Freaky Film Festival: Galicia’s Most Unconventional Genre Event

The Galician Freaky Film Festival stands out from other genre festivals by embracing the most offbeat, cult, and alternative side of cinema. Hosted in Vigo, northwest Spain, the event offers a distinctive atmosphere and a carefully curated selection of short films.

Many of the works screened are Galician premieres, and the festival is unique worldwide for subtitling all foreign short films into Galician.
Its ninth and most recent edition, held from 19–27 September 2025, welcomed nearly 4,000 attendees across screenings and parallel activities.

Méliès International Festivals Federation: A Global Mark of Distinction

Founded 40 years ago to promote European fantastic cinema worldwide, the MIFF brings together 33 festivals from 21 countries across four continents, including some of the world’s most renowned genre-film events. Collectively, they reach an annual audience of over 900,000 spectators. The MIFF oversees the Méliès d’Argent competitions for Best European Feature and Short Film and awards the Méliès d’Or, the federation’s top honor, chosen from the winners of each category.
In this context, the GFFF’s inclusion represents an international acknowledgment of the quality and unique voice of Galician cinema, which continues to gain visibility on the global stage.

EFFE Label: A European Recognition of Excellence

Alongside its MIFF membership, the Galician Freaky Film Festival has been awarded the EFFE Label (Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe), a distinction granted to festivals that demonstrate strong artistic vision, cultural impact, and international relevance.

This recognition positions the GFFF as a benchmark for creativity and innovation in audiovisual arts, highlighting its commitment to daring, contemporary programming. With this achievement, the festival reinforces its mission to connect Galicia with the most cutting-edge currents in global cinema.

A Bright Future for Galician Fantastic Cinema

With these two significant milestones, the Galician Freaky Film Festival now stands among Europe’s leading fantastic-film events. As the festival enters this new era, Galicia strengthens its role as a cultural reference point both nationally and internationally. Its commitment to genre cinema continues to expand and diversify, consolidating the region as a key hub for the development and promotion of fantastic cinema in Europe.
