EDGAR ALLAN FREAK LITERARY SPACE

A meeting point for lovers of genre narratives where the written word and cinematic image come together. Each edition of the festival, this space promotes the dissemination of fantastic, horror, and science fiction literature, weaving synergies with renowned authors and publishers. It’s the place where the public discovers the stories that feed the freak imagination, from contemporary Galician novels to underground comics, always within the genres we’re passionate about.

COMIC COMPETITION

The festival annually focuses on the world of comics, showcasing the talent hidden in this noble art of storytelling. Each edition proposes a different theme aligned with the festival’s narrative axis, allowing Galician and national artists to develop short stories that are later compiled into a collective fanzine. Endorsed by a jury of prestigious professionals, this competition has become an essential showcase for emerging and established creators.

EXHIBITIONS

GFFF regularly hosts exhibitions that dialogue with the freak and fantastic universe. As a result of the comic competition, collective fanzines are presented that bring together the participating comics from different editions, such as the “Doutor Vigo” volume, which features fourteen stories that take us to a Vigo threatened by mad scientists capable of anything to achieve their goal. These exhibitions transform the festival spaces into galleries celebrating the visual and narrative creativity of our artistic community.

GFFF INDUSTRY

GFFF is not just a showcase of fantastic and horror cinema: it’s also a professional platform that drives the Galician audiovisual sector and establishes bridges between creators, production companies, institutions, and cultural professionals. This section develops a comprehensive program of specialized activities, ranging from presenting projects in development to roundtables on funding and strategic collaborations between festivals. A fundamental meeting space for the Galician audiovisual industry, consolidating year after year.

WHAT ARE YOU UP TO, FREAK?

One of GFFF Industry’s star activities is this work-in-progress space dedicated to Galician projects in development. This initiative allows creators to present their projects to industry professionals, create synergies between production companies, directors, and other industry agents, and bring the specialized public closer to what’s coming in Galician audiovisual. The objective is to strengthen the festival as a meeting point for the sector, showcasing local talent in all its creative phases.

ROUND TABLES AND PROFESSIONAL DEBATES

GFFF Industry organizes specialized meetings that address the most relevant themes for the audiovisual sector: talks with leading figures to analyze in depth the processes of creation, production, and distribution, and training sessions on how to access the main available funding lines and how to structure viable audiovisual projects. These training and debate spaces become practical tools for sector professionals.

NORTHERN BROTHERHOODS

In collaboration with Vigo Film Office, GFFF promotes meetings between genre festivals from different regions of Spain. These sessions allow sharing experiences, analyzing the health of genre cinema, and establishing collaborations between programming teams. Each participating festival selects a significant short film from its territory for a special screening that complements these professional meetings, thus strengthening the network of festivals committed to fantastic cinema.

FANTASTIC TAPAS

The festival’s first Freak Gastronomic Route: a tapas trail that takes GFFF freakiness to the streets and bars of Vigo. During the festival days, various city restaurants offer a Fantastic Tapa created especially for the occasion, each one inspired by a cult film or character. The public can taste, vote, and decide which will be the winning tapa of the Freaks’ Gastronomic Olympus. This activity demonstrates that freak cinema can invade all aspects of urban culture, from screen to plate.

ZOMBIE WALK

One of the most anticipated activities that transforms downtown Vigo into a festive zombie apocalypse. Much more than people in costumes walking the streets: it’s pure artistic expression, a celebration of creativity that breaks conventions and turns the streets into a living stage. It includes free professional makeup service, a march through the city’s most emblematic streets, a massive flashmob, and a final zombie catwalk where a jury of audiovisual professionals awards the best living dead of the night. Free activity open to all audiences.

FANTASTIC AND FREAK FAIR OF GALICIA (FFFG)

A unique space where art, cool culture, and the purest Galician freakiness come together. At FFFG, Vigo’s most interesting cultural exhibition points coincide with a selection of artists who reveal the freak talents that Galicia has hidden. The objective is to turn it into the definitive annual showcase of the freakiest of Galicia, consolidating itself since its first edition as the essential meeting for those seeking the most authentic and transgressive side of Galician culture and art.

PEQUEFREAK: MY FIRST FESTIVAL

Two full days dedicated to children and youth audiences, a unique event in our region where the youngest can be introduced to the wonderful world of freak cinema and enjoy the experience of living their own film festival. It includes specialized screenings of fantastic animation short films from around the world, a family feature film, special effects and makeup workshops taught by industry professionals, and a children’s jury that evaluates and awards the competing short films. A true breeding ground for future film and special effects artists.

CHARITY AUCTION

GFFF organizes a charity auction during the festival, with proceeds supporting important social causes for the community. In recent editions, this auction has been held in favor of Afaga Alzheimer, demonstrating the festival’s commitment not only to freak culture but also to solidarity and support for organizations working for social welfare. An opportunity for the freak community to contribute to causes that go beyond the screen.
